MAGIC  REALISM:

ARTISTS CONNECTED TO MAGIC REALISM

- magical links edited by Bjørn J. Berger

It is open for discussion to what extent the artists listed below are representative of Magic Realism. René Magritte is a good example. The Surrealists and others claim him as a Surrealist. Even though he was an early member of their movement—to the point of participating in the design and publication of a Surrealist magazine—he later decided that the Surrealists had gone too far, and returned to what he had been doing all along, which was Magic Realism.

The first group of artists are all well-known and highly respected painters, generally acknowledged to have a strong connection to Magic Realism (with the possible exception of Magritte). Artists in the latter group have more variation of expression; some fit easily into that category, while others require viewers to seek out the influences of Magic Realism in their work. In some, the influences exist just as an undercurrent of their art.
